Investing in enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems can help businesses to drastically improve their ability to resolve issues.

This is the opinion of James Burdiss, vice-president and chief information officer at industrial product manufacturer Affinia Group, who wrote in an article for CIO that these platforms have helped boost the performance of his company’s IT functions.

He remarked: "We’re already seeing a huge improvement in processes and decision making, thanks to our push to move to a global ERP."

According to Mr Burdiss, this move leads to an increase in confidence in IT infrastructure and allows the firm to take advantage of its market position in the future.

While it can be hard to make large investments during tough economic conditions, he added, deploying ERP systems will enable organisations to emerge from the downturn stronger.

Writing for the Technology Evaluation Centers blog recently, Khudsiya Quadri stated that ERP technology encourages cross-departmental communications.
