Companies recognise the importance of updating their information technology platforms in preparation for the economic upturn, new research has claimed, something which could prompt increased sales of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

A survey by Gartner found that 62 per cent of US and UK chief executive officers understand that IT-enabled changes in their organisation are key to emerging from the recession successfully.

The results also showed that many firms are concentrating more on expanding rather than cutting costs.

"Business leaders are gasping for growth after a long period holding their breath and they are expecting to increase the importance of IT in their post-recession approach," research vice-president and Gartner fellow Mark Raskino said.

According to Mr Raskino, this switch in priorities means that enterprises will need to reinvest in a number of their central IT projects, which could include ERP systems.

Gartner is a research and advisory organisation with 1,200 analysts operating in 80 countries.ADNFCR-2732-ID-19524410-ADNFCR
