Ethernet speeds ‘will be improved by virtualisation’

5th January

Category: Virtualisation

Server virtualisation has been predicted to improve Ethernet speeds in 2010.

Speaking to SearchNetworking.com.au, senior vice president of the Yankee Group Zeus Kerravala explained that the technology will bring about innovation in data centres.

It is likely that vendors will be able to offer 40 gigabit Ethernet as a result, the expert suggested.

Another industry expert, Neil Barton, recently suggested that the cost and flexibility advantages of server virtualisation mean more firms will implement it this year.

And Mr Kerravala remarked: "Virtualisation really hasn't impacted the network yet, but it's starting to. It'll push along ten [gigabit Ethernet adoption] and I think we'll see 40 [gigabit Ethernet] products next year."

He also suggested that server virtualisation will contribute to a return to TCP/IP as the main protocol for many enterprises.

Based in Boston, the Yankee Group is an independent technology research and consulting firm that is primarily concerned with connectivity.
