Companies should spend some time evaluating their employees before offering them home working opportunities and investing in the technology to make this a reality.
That could be the conclusion after the findings of a study led by professor Timothy Golden, of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, were revealed.
The expert and his fellow researchers took a closer look at 316 staff at a communications firm and evaluated their suitability for home working.
It was noted that while the option is seemingly an appealing one – both for staff and businesses – it can in fact be tough.
Professor Golden said that people who allowed their work and family lives to overlap tended to end the day more tired than others.
Such conclusions are in stark contrast to those made by Rhonda Breitkreuz, assistant professor in the department of human ecology at the University of Alberta, who was quoted recently by the Edmonton Journal as suggesting home working is the perfect way to reduce stress levels.
