Companies that choose to upgrade enterprise resource planning (ERP) software and other IT solutions have been advised to consider the environment when doing so.
Andrew Boddington, director of marketing at Return on IT, explained that firms must find a "balance" between the latest technology and retaining green principles.
He suggested the factors that must be considered include the performance of solutions and the time required to manage these effectively – and these should be weighed up against environmental responsibility.
"Where smaller companies may have the flexibility to keep older machines working and add upgrades, larger and rapidly-growing organisations may find it more effective to replace systems with newer models," Mr Boddington advised.
Although there can be extra hardware costs attached to investing in new technology, gains in efficiency and productivity could more than make up for this.
A recent report by Nick Castellina, senior research associate of the Aberdeen Group's Enterprise Applications research team, found that ERP software can be particularly effective for finance professionals.
