Virtualisation is to become more popular with businesses looking to improve their operations, it has been claimed.

Writing for the Register, Martin Atherton of Freeform Dynamics said that many firms are "bringing virtualisation into the mix".

Commenting on feedback he and his enterprise had received, he remarked: "There’s a significant body of organisations gearing up to take their virtualisation activities to the next level."

And it is important that these companies are well-prepared for integrating this kind of platform into their work processes, Mr Atherton added.

He went on to say that professionals will need to ensure they have the correct IT management skills in place to guarantee the service remains efficient.

Overseeing a virtualised environment does provide an extra layer of complexity that needs to be addressed beforehand, the expert explained.

A recent study by Gartner revealed the majority of 1,600 chief information officers polled by the company ranked virtualisation as their main IT priority for 2010.
