Firms ‘should adapt practices to suit remote access workers’

Companies that are utilising remote access technology for flexible working arrangements have been reminded of the need to reorganise their management strategies accordingly.

Business expert Wayne Turmel told BNET that the rise in popularity of home working is creating the need for firms to adapt the way they manage team members with whom they do not have direct contact.

He emphasised the importance of good communication, highlighting the need for both synchronous and non-synchronous correspondence methods to be employed to keep home workers in touch with decision-makers and other team members.

Mr Turmel also emphasised the necessity of managers engaging with remote workers on a more personal level, organising face-to-face meetings and involving themselves directly in projects to create a proper team spirit.

"Managers need to take action now and help their organisations develop best practices that will help everyone deal with the way we really work today," he said.

Earlier this week, Shirley Borrett of the Telework Association stated that the benefits of home working are becoming more widely recognised among British businesses.
