Firms ‘should embrace home working ahead of new UK laws’

The introduction of new employment laws in the UK should be taken as a cue for companies to embrace the possibilities of remote access working.

This is the view of Work Wise North East (WWNE), which is calling on companies to recognise the numerous benefits home working can offer to staff and employers alike, reports nebusiness.co.uk.

More workers will be seeking to utilise home working options after new laws are introduced in April 2011 that equalise the rights of parents to request flexible hours, as well as simplifying the rules surrounding the issue.

According to WWNE, this will be a positive development, as flexible working can improve employee wellbeing and productivity.

It cited the example of BT, which has experienced reduced absenteeism and monetary savings since adopting the policy.

WWNE chair Simon Roberson said flexible working "makes sense whatever the size of your company or organisation".

Earlier this week, a US study from workplace solutions company Regus showed that offering home working options is increasingly becoming the norm for businesses due to the benefits it offers.
