Firms looking to utilise the expertise of older employees may want to consider implementing flexible working practices.
Mike Emmott, public policy advisor at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, suggested remote access employment - made possible through technology such as Citrix XenApp - can entice experienced workers to stay on in their roles.
The industry figure noted the idea of retirement is starting to disappear in legislation and elderly staff are increasingly wanting to work for longer.
"There will need to be more flexibility because it is not just flexibility in working times, but flexibility about the sort of jobs people do," he explained.
Mr Emmott added bosses will have to give more thought to the possibility of staff working from home if they wish to get the most productivity out of their workers.
Director of corporate marketing at Orange Max Taylor recently claimed a workforce that is mobile is usually one that is high in morale.
