If more companies adopt flexible working practices, commuter levels will drop, it has been suggested.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, transport minister Norman Baker noted such a move would be beneficial for the environment and for general quality of life.
The politician observed remote access employment - which can be achieved with software such as Citrix Access Gateway - cuts carbon emissions as fewer cars will be on the road.
He explained he is to trial a number of incentives, such as encouraging employers to allow staff to work at home at least one day every fortnight.
Work-travel patterns need to be altered, Mr Baker remarked, which would help the government implement its policy that every worker in the UK should have the right to request flexible working.
The UK Family Friendly Report Card 2010 recently revealed workforces in Britain are becoming increasingly mobile after the nation received a B grade for its efforts in creating a decent work-life relationship.
