Flexible working ‘can help companies to retain staff’

Companies that offer flexible employment allowances such as home working may find that they can make themselves more appealing to staff members.

This is the view of Adrienne Burgess, head of research at the Fatherhood Institute, who stated that UK businesses are becoming more understanding of the personal needs and commitments of their workers.

According to Ms Burgess, this is particularly the case among fathers, who are more likely to have significant caring responsibilities nowadays due to the growing number of working mothers.

She stated that this has made it more important that companies are tolerant of this and offer adaptable working conditions in response.

"Employers are becoming aware of the fact that people have other lives and that to keep the brightest and the best, you need to be flexible," she added.

Last month, Maggie Berry, managing director for information portal Women in Technology, stated that the rise of home working has helped workforces to become more diverse.
