Companies that utilise remote access employment can expect to have a more productive workforce, a new study has suggested.

A report entitled Finding an Extra Day or Two has been compiled by investigators at Brigham Young University in Utah and focused on almost 25,000 members of staff at IBM, the Telegraph reports.

Employees from 75 different countries were quizzed and the results showed flexible working, which can be made possible through such software as Citrix XenApp, enabled them to put in an average of 57 hours a week without feeling it interfered with their personal life.

This number was significantly higher than the 38 hours that was indicated by office-based workers.

Professor Jeffrey Hill, leader of the analysis, said: "Flexible work options are associated with higher job satisfaction [and] boosting morale when it may be suffering."

Stephen Alambritis, spokesman for the Federation of Small Businesses, recently observed remote working is "common sense" for small and medium-sized enterprises.
