The British government has been urged to reaffirm its commitment to the environment in order for technologies such as green IT to be widely adopted.

According to the Environmental Audit Committee, unnecessary doubt has been cast in the industry by the recent decision in Westminster to launch a review of its emissions targets.

Originally, the plan had been to cut emissions in half by 2025, but this is now said to be under consideration.

As such, many in the business world will believe prime minister David Cameron and the coalition are not serious about tackling climate change.

Commenting on the government's role, Conservative member of the EAC Zac Goldsmith said: "Unless they provide real long-term certainty, the transition to a low-carbon economy will be slower and bumpier than it needs to be."

The Business Software Alliance recently ranked the UK as the world's fifth-best provider of IT technology, behind the US, Finland, Singapore and Sweden.
