Green IT ‘can be the key to lowering costs’

Companies in the UK have been advised that running a green IT set-up will help them on the road to lowering their operational costs.

Alan Beresford, managing director of EcoCooling.org, explained there are numerous steps bosses must complete before they can be sure they are targeting the right areas.

For instance, the best idea to start with is to assess all technology – including servers and storage – and work out whether they are all correctly utilised.

Mr Beresford noted that these pieces of equipment tend to consume the most electricity, so finding out ways to reduce reliance on them – perhaps by deploying virtualisation solutions – can be a wise move.

He suggested there is often far too much technology being used by firms, stating: "A quick look at that and you can think, 'well, I can use a lot less equipment and maybe use better equipment and more energy-efficient equipment and use less space'."

Steve Herrod, chief technology officer at leading virtualisation firm VMware, recently told Forbes he is anticipating a significant increase in the number of applications on the market in 2012.
