Home working ‘can reduce stress levels’

Companies that allow staff to carry out home working rather than venturing to the office every day may find they become more relaxed as a result.

The Edmonton Journal has quoted Rhonda Breitkreuz, assistant professor in the department of human ecology at the University of Alberta, who suggested a 2009 study by the Vanier Institute of the Family is evidence of this.

It found that the amount of time people are spending with their families is on the wane, which has triggered a rise in absenteeism and dissatisfaction.

Mr Breitkreuz explained that home working is one way to "get out of that rat race" and improve quality of life.

Not being accountable to a boss, not having to commute and experiencing fewer work-related worries could result in increased happiness and productivity.

Shirley Borrett, development director at the Telework Association, recently said that home working has both environmental and economic benefits.
