Companies across the UK could unlock a number of productivity benefits and cost savings via a wider implementation of home working technology.
This is the conclusion of a Citrix-sponsored survey from the Telework Research Network, suggesting that by allowing staff to work from home two days per week, firms can increase productivity by 20 per cent while cutting absenteeism and real estate costs.
Despite this, the UK is currently lagging behind many other EU nations in terms of the use of remote access technology, with only 4.9 per cent of the country's employee labour force regularly working from home.
Principal investigator Kate Lister said that if all of those with the ability and desire to work from home did so for two days each week, it would take the equivalent of two-thirds of all London workers off the country's roads.
"Individual, company and community savings would total over £32 billion a year," she added.
Earlier this month, the Fatherhood Institute stated that flexible work options can also be vital for companies seeking to retain the services of their best staff members.
