Home working ‘changing the way firms evaluate productivity’

Category: Workforce Mobility

The growing popularity of home working and remote access setups is helping companies to realise the benefits of providing flexibility for staff.

According to Martin Lyne, director of small and medium-sized enterprise marketing at T-Mobile, companies are starting to judge workers' productivity by their results, rather than on how much time they spend in the office.

He said this is because many firms are becoming more reliant on staff who are only able to work during specific hours, including part-time workers and those with family commitments.

Mr Lyne suggested that remote access innovations allow these employees to fit their work around their personal schedules, which ultimately benefits their bosses.

"Mobile technology helps small businesses be productive regardless of where [their staff] are," he explained.

Last week, the Federation of Small Businesses advised SME owners that embracing flexible working models can also help to improve the mental wellbeing of workers who might otherwise be overstressed.
