Home working measures are to be used by the UK's civil service during the 2012 Olympic Games in London in order to help ease congestion during the sporting event.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the Department for Transport is calling on Whitehall staff to utilise remote access technology during the games, thus avoiding adding to the hefty burden that will be faced by the capital's transport network.
It is thought that around 40 per cent of civil servants will be working from home over the course of next summer, with bosses planning to implement monitoring systems to ensure productivity is maintained.
The government is hoping that its actions will encourage other companies to consider the benefits offered by home working.
Transport secretary Phillip Hammond said: "We have committed to reducing our travel footprint during the Olympics and increasing home working will be a key feature to achieving our goal."
Earlier this month, a Telework Research Network survey suggested that UK firms could improve productivity by 20 per cent by allowing staff to work at home for two days each week.
