Companies might want to look to IT support services in a bid to avoid staff confusion about data security in the cloud and virtualised environments.
Alex Teh, commercial director of Vigil Software, explained that when adopting virtualisation technologies and moving data to the cloud, firms need to ensure "that those who are accessing those applications are who they say they are".
He said "the logging of what they're doing, the auditing of what they're doing inside the cloud service is very, very important".
One way of ensuring security within the cloud or a virtualised environment could be for firms to turn to managed services companies to help them control these technologies.
Mr Teh said cloud computing is increasingly becoming a more prominent trend, as it provides small companies "with the ability to deliver applications without investing in the infrastructure required to do it".
Jean-Louis Bravard, director at Burnt-Oak Partners, told ComputerWeekly.com recently that companies are beginning to realise outsourced IT can provide them with more than just financial benefits.
