Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems - such as SAP Business One - are often not used to their full capacity after being deployed, one specialist has claimed.
Writing for Business Finance, Robert Kugel of Ventana Research noted that studies undertaken by his organisation show that many corporations could be missing out on important business opportunities for this reason.
"It’s like driving your car in the lowest gear and then being puzzled and annoyed that you can’t go as far or as fast as you want but pay more than you’d like for gas," he explained.
According to Mr Kugel, this may have a detrimental impact on cost levels, as well as restricting a firm’s potential efficiency.
Making sure ERP systems work effectively can also allow financial companies to focus on high-value pursuits, he added.
Procedures often not addressed by executives include automation of routine processes and streamlining cross-functional operations, the expert concluded.
Richard Herring of Volt Europe recently claimed that IT professionals with ERP skills are going to be sought after in 2010, as an increasing number of enterprises look to enhance the usage of their platforms.
