14th July

Category: ERP systems

The McLaren Formula 1 team has been using technology developed by enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems provider SAP, it has emerged.

Cars driven by world champion Jenson Button and former winner Lewis Hamilton have been fitted with the applications to help tune their precision, computerworlduk.com journalist Leo King reports.

The vehicles include more than 200 sensors that encrypt data back to the SAP systems when the cars are speeding round the track.

McLaren Racing managing director Jonathan Neale told attendees at the SAP World Tour in Birmingham the team "uses SAP to analyse the data in real-time as the guys test out, qualify and race on the circuit".

He added the software is "crucial" in enabling them to make decisions on-the-spot.

In a recent article for Computer Weekly, Ian Murphy noted SAP has dominated the ERP market in regards to small and medium-sized enterprises for a number of years as the popularity of the technology has quickly grown over the last decade.
