An increase in the number of businesses choosing virtualisation is one of the outcomes of the recent recession, it has been suggested.

Reporting for Information Week, Joseph Brown claimed the economic downturn has caused a cultural shift in the way companies are conducting themselves.

The industry figure noted firms now want to ensure their technology is adequately protected and Mr Brown forecasted virtual applications are being seen as the most effective way to achieve this.

He commented: "The resulting demand for more efficient and secure IT systems has created a perfect environment for virtualisation to proliferate."

Opting for virtual software is "one of the smartest bets" in the computing sector, he added, as chief information officers need to look for the next round of "efficiency gains" by investigating in storage and desktop virtualisation.

Elias Khnaser recently remarked in an article for Forbes that one of the key benefits of selecting virtual products is the assurance of business continuity and quicker disaster recovery times.
