A £51 million investment featuring outsourced IT has the potential to save numerous organisations money, but is being badly managed at the moment.
The National Audit Office has spoken of the centre that acts as a platform for seven research councils, revealing it has yet to make the expected efficiency gains.
If managed correctly, operations can be streamlined and efficiency improved, although this can take some time after implementation.
According to the office, accounting software and other financial equipment is not yet up to speed, although it is expected to trigger significant gains once it is.
"The Department [for Business, Innovation and Skills], the research councils and the Shared Service Centre now need to get performance up to where it needs to be," stated Amyas Morse, head of the National Audit Office.
A recent poll by jobs website Totaljobs.com, reported by the Press Association, showed that almost two-thirds of human resources directors believe outsourced IT has the potential to save money.
