Outsourced IT requirements ‘will increase in 2010’

Businesses will begin to explore the possibility of investing in outsourced IT more closely in 2010, one expert has claimed.

Patrick O’Brien, senior analyst at consultancy Ovum, said that while last year saw a dip in the requirement for IT support services, there has been "positive news" regarding an increase in interest.

"I really do expect in 2010 for outsourcing to pick up," he remarked. "The markets already expect that as well."

Mr O’Brien noted the main advantage of outsourced IT is the cost benefits, with many organisations seeing this as the primary objective for purchasing managed services.

Making savings is often the lead cause of this kind of project, he added, but firms will also be looking to bring in new business and retain existing clients by boosting their flexibility.

According to a survey by Ovum, one-third of chief information officers believe their IT budgets will rise this year, with senior analyst at the organisation Rhonda Ascierto describing the results as "promising".
