One of Britain's leading building societies is to relieve itself of an "administrative burden" by turning to outsourced IT, according to one of its staff.

Becky Hewitt, head of human resources at Leeds Building Society, said there are several advantages to handing responsibility for a variety of tasks to specialists outside the company.

"For us, outsourcing was the right choice. It gives us peace of mind and frees up our internal resource to focus on other human resources priorities," she stated.

Among the jobs that the organisation is to outsource – initially on a pilot basis – are administration, communications and full regulatory reporting.

Outsourcing is not only an option for large firms like Leeds Building Society. Musician Drew Smith recently told the New York Times it is open to anybody, as he used the process to put together a new music video.

Its benefits can be wide-ranging, from financial improvements to efficiency gains.
