Remote working ‘cuts costs and emissions’

The cost-saving benefits of remote access software have been emphasised by a BT official.

Chris Tuppen, chief sustainability officer at the telecoms firm, was quoted by Business & Leadership as highlighting the advantages for the bottom-line as well as the environment.

He explained that nearly ten per cent of BT’s 100,000 employees permanently work from home, with more than 70,000 capable of doing so.

"This saves us £57 million a year in accommodation and saves 1.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide," said Mr Tuppen, adding: "It is our view that flexible workers are more productive."

In addition to remote access software, the expert pointed to a number of ways in which firms can ensure they are more sustainable, with "comprehensive measurement" an important first step to achieving this goal.

Earlier this month, PC Pro writer Karl Wright argued small and medium-sized enterprises will need to consider remote access possibilities in order to stay competitive, as employees should be able to work in any weather.
