Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems provider SAP is keen to stay ahead of the competition in regards to its environmentally-friendly practices, it has been suggested.

In an interview with Forbes, the Germany-based firm's first-ever sustainability officer Peter Graf noted the organisation understands the importance of green measures and realises they can fundamentally change the way company operations work.

The industry figure stated: "We must, as the leader in business process software, be a leader in sustainability if we don't want to lose our leadership position."

He observed SAP, which provides ERP systems such as SAP Business One, has implemented a target of reducing its carbon footprint this year by half of what it was in 2007.

This would mean a drop of 64 per cent on a per-employee basis, Mr Graf added.

The sustainability drive at the corporation was recently highlighted when its North American campus in Pennsylvania achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum certification.
