Companies that employ enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems from SAP could expect the software to control operations throughout its business, it has been suggested.

Information Week used the example of Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board, which has opted for a SAP ERP system to provide it with rapid information access as well as improved resource utilisation.

The source noted: "The deployment is aimed at integrating, automating and managing resources across its organisation."

It observed the state electricity board sought an IT solution that could enhance a number of operational functions.

These included financial accounting, payroll, human resources and material, project and maintenance management, the publication stated.

It added this approach would be part of a centralised information system that would help provide a single view to management personnel.

Writing recently for Computerworld, Mahesh Sharma observed SAP software has been adopted by Australia Post, in an attempt to bolster four of its business units - postal, retail e-services and distribution.
