Businesses in Scotland have been called upon to implement home working measures in order to avoid a repeat of the disruptions caused this winter.
David Richardson, Highlands and Islands manager at the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, told the Inverness Courier that "virtually every industry" in the area has been badly affected by the heavy snow seen last month.
He noted that the bad weather caused severe interruptions to deliveries and transport, preventing firms from operating as normal and giving the impression that "Scotland as a whole was closed for business".
Mr Richardson said in future that companies should ensure they have implemented proper contingency plans for inclement climate conditions, including teleconferencing and home working.
Earlier this month, the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals suggested that remote access facilities can also help firms to cope with the current flu outbreak.
The organisation noted that this can help ill staff members to work from home, thus minimising the risk of the infection spreading.
