Server virtualisation can enable an organisation to improve its ability to migrate between operating systems, it has been claimed.
Writing for Computerworld, Chris Poelker noted that firms can use this form of virtualisation to switch between software running on different hardware.
This can be achieved even when applications are still being used, he added, which is particularly useful.
Mr Poelker went on to say that virtualisation can be also applied in the same way for storage functions.
He stated: "Virtualising the storage and incorporating the intelligence for provisioning and protection at the virtualisation layer enables companies to use any storage they want and not be locked into any individual vendor."
According to the expert, this allows businesses to experience a range of benefits, including maximising cost-efficiencies.
In recent news, technology journalist Steve Gold stated in an article for IT Pro Portal that storage virtualisation provides enterprises with the ability to do more with less by consolidating their current setup.
