Firms of all sizes are increasingly turning to server virtualisation, which is in turn driving growth of the security market.

A new report by Infonetics Research has found the protection for virtualised environments sector is due to grow by 57 per cent in 2011 compared to last year.

Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for security at the body, said companies of varying statures have been attracted to server virtualisation in recent times.

He noted the adoption of such solutions along with the rollout of new IT technology designed to deliver services in the cloud have come together to create unique challenges.

"These challenges represent key drivers for the virtual security appliance market and reflect why the market is growing so fast," explained Mr Wilson.

CSO magazine recently reported that Citrix's virtualisation technology has been acquired alongside solutions from Microsoft by the Australian Department of Defence as part of a significant upgrade.
