Server virtualisation ‘bolsters disaster recovery’

Server virtualisation can be of benefit to companies looking to bolster their disaster recovery capabilities, it has been suggested.

Writing for Search CIO-Midmarket, Laura Smith noted the technology has been adopted by Sun National Bank, which wanted to make sure its IT systems could support its expanding infrastructure.

The company's chief information officer Angelo Valletta said the bank's typical response time to such events was 16-to-20 hours, but he added the firm did not want its customers waiting almost a day before the system was back up.

Following the deployment, the organisation now has one virtualised server for every eight-to-ten machines, which is also a more cost-effective solution, he explained.

Mr Valletta added: "We implemented blade servers and virtualisation to achieve a ten-to-one ratio."

In a recent article for Computerworld, Julia King claimed many businesses are investing in virtualisation in an effort to save more money in the long term.
