A university in London has decided to introduce server virtualisation technology in its headquarters in a bid to improve the service it offers to students and staff.
City University has opted for VMware solutions, which are designed not only to make it easier for people to access computer systems but also to reduce the running costs built up by the education centre, reported Computerworld UK.
Eric McIntosh, technical architect at the university, said the facility was not happy with its previous software and decided to choose VMware in order to trigger an improvement in performance.
"We have open access labs with around 1,600 PCs for students to drop in any time that suits them," he explained.
As well as lower costs and an enhanced service, the university should also enjoy greater flexibility and easier application management, the news source noted.
TBR analyst Elizabeth Hedstrom recently told iTWire that she believes VMware is in a strong position in the virtualisation market.
