Server virtualisation can help organisations to maximise the efficiency of their existing technology, one specialist has suggested.
Writing for the Register, systems administrator Adam Salisbury noted that as virtualisation has spread and become popular, it has matured in a number of ways.
He stated: "It's fast becoming clear that we can now do far more work with far less resource, even on older servers."
According to Mr Salisbury, end-of-life machines that may have needed to be replaced by the end of this year can easily support a "handful of virtual servers", allowing for "huge savings".
Costs are reduced on equipment procurement, he added, which allows for more space and reduced energy consumption.
Readers were also advised that VMware's vCenter software has been "one of the biggest developments" in the market in recent years, due to its flexibility.
Vice-president of marketing in the Datacentre and cloud division of Citrix John Bara was recently reported by WebMediaBrands as commenting that cost-efficiency will be the main target of virtualisation platforms in the coming years.
