Server virtualisation ‘is the top priority for CIOs in 2012’

Chief information officers (CIOs) at companies in the UK will look towards server virtualisation as their number one priority in 2012, according to a new survey.

Findings by the International Data Corporation (IDC) show almost 40 per cent of those in high-flying posts are targeting success in this area more than any other over the next 12 months, reported InformationWeek.

Other features of IT that CIOs admitted they are interested in include the cloud, business analytics and collaboration.

The financial savings firms make from server virtualisation will be used to fund a number of new initiatives, such as mobility, social media and analytics, the study concluded.

David McNally, IT executive advisor at the IDC, said: "The cost savings that have been realised from virtualisation and cloud services have been significant and they are being consumed by next-generation technologies."

Steve Herrod, chief technology officer at VMware, recently told Forbes that he is expecting a "new wave" of applications to hit the virtualisation market this year.
