VMware is one of the server virtualisation industry's major players and, if one expert's views are accurate, will remain so for some time to come.

TBR analyst Elizabeth Hedstrom has told iTWire that she believes the firm to be in a particularly strong position within its sector.

It recently announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011, with a year-on-year revenue growth of 27 per cent revealed and a 32 per cent hike in takings for the year as a whole.

Ms Hedstrom suggested VMware has a strong track record of being able to give customers what they want and this has "reinforced its trusted brand, driving install base loyalty and increased investment as customers make their own migrations from converged infrastructures to efficient cloud-driven environments".

Steve Herrod, VMware's chief technology officer, recently told Forbes that he is expecting a new wave of applications to hit the virtualisation market in 2012.
