Less-sizable firms may drive the market in uptake of virtualisation platforms, one expert has suggested.
Writing for the Register, Jon Collins of Freeform Dynamics noted that large businesses are not necessarily where the sector is going to be most dominant.
"For smaller companies perhaps the need is greater to bake virtualisation into the environment, [as] the more standardised applications and packages can be run on a smaller, easier to manage footprint," he remarked.
According to Mr Collins, virtualisation could "avalanche" in terms of popularity over the next couple of years, taking a similar path to mobile phones, the Internet and email capabilities.
Even if this is not the case, he added, platforms such as this could be a slow-burner that evolves into the mainstream, much like business intelligence.
