Virtualisation could bring many benefits to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that choose to implement the software, it has been suggested.
Writing for ZDNet, Eric Courville explained the advantages that can be gained by such a move.
The specialist noted virtualisation platforms, such as Citrix XenDesktop, can bolster efficiency and reduce costs as the technology enables increased server utilisation and storage.
Mr Courville observed: "Virtualisation allows organisations to reduce [planned] downtime by relocating workloads before systems undergo planned maintenance or upgrades."
Provisioning can be quickened by migrating virtual desktops and servers between physical platforms without having any impact on users, the expert claimed.
Disaster recovery can also be speeded up, he added, as businesses have fewer systems to run the virtual workloads.
Graham Smith, contributing for TMCnet.com, recently wrote virtualisation has become increasingly effective at improving physical server utilisation while also enabling computer resources to gain greater flexibility in their operations.
