‘Strategic approach required’ when implementing virtualisation

Companies looking to transform their operations through server virtualisation need to adopt a coordinated strategy when doing so, it has been suggested.

Writing for Help Net Security, Peter Eicher noted data protection needs to be at the forefront of considerations on the process.

The expert observed it is not only backup, but disaster recovery and secondary storage that have to be looked at.

"It is essential that data protection efforts reduce hardware purchases, rather than require additional hardware to make it work," he explained.

Mr Eicher advised those who are implementing virtual software to minimise impact to host systems during backups, focus on simplicity and speed for recovery and minimise requirements for secondary storage.

He added planning at all levels of a business is required to make the most out of a virtualisation investment.

Kathleen Hall, contributing recently for Computer Weekly, observed virtual technology is becoming increasingly popular among small and medium-sized enterprises as it allows them to save money on energy costs.
