Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems provider SAP is viewing sustainability as the next mega-trend in the world of IT.

The Germany-based company’s vice-president for business user and platform in Asia Pacific and Japan Atul Patel, noted environmental concerns need to be tackled head-on, reports John Mark Tuazon for Computer World.

Mr Patel remarked: "[Organisations] will have to use sustainability concepts in their business [and integrate them] as part of their commercial planning in order to take a holistic view of the problem."

He explained other trends in recent times have included industrialisation, computing and the internet, but predicted it is the turn of green issues to come to the fore.

However, the industry figure observed other firms are not approaching the situation in an adequate manner, rather employing pet projects that have little or no financial backing.

Recent figures announced by SAP revealed the ERP systems provider has experienced a 16 per cent growth in revenue in the second-quarter of 2010.
