Companies have been urged to jump on the "virtualisation train" if they want to improve their operations and modernise their practices.

Writing for Ostatic.com, Sam Dean noted the technology - which includes products such as Citrix XenServer and Citrix XenDesktop - can bring numerous benefits to a firm because it can provide more centralised control.

The expert asked whether customers have opted for virtual appliances and added: "If you haven't, you're missing out on the incredible convenience of having more than one operating system at your disposal when you're using a single computer."

Mr Dean noted virtualisation technology has significantly progressed in recent years, meaning the advantages of the platforms are no longer reserved solely for those with a system with "decent resources available".

A recent report from research group Gartner found virtualisation has driven server shipments in the second quarter of 2010, as 2.1 million such dispatches were recorded in this period.
