Firms interested in expanding their range of computer-based technology and green IT systems may find the UK is one of the best markets to operate within.

New research by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) has revealed which countries lead the way when it comes to IT.

With the US perhaps unsurprisingly securing top spot, the UK ranked an impressive fifth, behind only the States, Finland, Singapore and Sweden.

The BSA has published its 2011 IT Industry Competitiveness Index that illustrates the quality and competition within technology sectors around the world.

"It is abundantly clear from this year's IT Industry Competitiveness Index that investing in the fundamentals of technology innovation will pay huge dividends over the long term," stated Robert Holleyman, president and chief executive officer at the BSA.

Shaun Jeffery, ICT operations manager at Newham University Hospital Trust, recently told the Guardian that the medical department had overhauled its data centre and cut down on the servers it uses in order to go green.
