The UK police force is turning to outsourced IT services in a bid to save money and be more efficient.
Home secretary Theresa May, speaking at the summer conference of the Association of Chief Police Officers, said around £1.2 billion is currently spent on IT by the police.
Somewhere in the region of 2,000 separate systems, across 100 data centres, are in use, making it a fairly complicated IT system to have in place.
Outsourcing the IT to another company will save money, as well as allowing the police to streamline its services, it is hoped.
By spring 2012, these changes should be in place, which will have an impact on the cost of the police's IT services, Ms May said.
A recent report by Ovum revealed that outsourced IT is forecast to experience strong growth in the next couple of years. By 2015, the market is expected to grow by 4.4 per cent.
