Virtual desktop infrastructure can help companies simplify their administration processes, it has been claimed.
Writing for InfoWorld, Paul Venezia explained the software can enable a firm to contain the core of its functionality and business information in the data centre, rather than being widely dispersed.
The expert said by centralising machines, an enterprise can "remove the need for such basic desktop maintenance as replacing failing power supplies, hard drives and so forth".
He noted power consumption is also lessened and office cooling costs are often reduced as well.
This is down to the removal of "fat client systems" and the 350-watt power supplies that they demand, the specialist remarked.
Mr Venezia added the upside to adopting such technology can therefore be substantial.
In a recent article for Computerworld, Julia King observed more and more businesses are turning their attentions to virtualisation as they seek to save money in the long term.
