Virtualisation platforms will become more prevalent in firms throughout 2010, one expert has claimed.

Executive vice-president of IT consultancy Patni Computer Systems Satish Joshi said that desktop virtualisation, in particular, will grow in popularity, Rediff Business reports.

He stated: "There is considerable progress being made in enhancing user experience and reducing complexity for ‘virtualising’ desktops, thereby boosting its demand in the coming year."

According to Mr Joshi, these kind of platforms have a range of benefits for organisations, including boosting operation efficiency, reducing power consumption and bringing down carbon footprints.

Virtualisation is already widely used for storage and server functions, he added, but in 2010 software requirements for desktops are likely to expand rapidly as more and more enterprises become aware of its advantages in this area.

Earlier this month, in an article for Forbes, Lee Gomes and Taylor Buley claimed that desktop virtualisation could be about to break the mould regarding hardware upgrades relating to the release of new operating systems.ADNFCR-2732-ID-19534972-ADNFCR
