Category: Virtualisation
Companies are becoming increasingly interested in virtualisation because of the benefits it can provide, including cost-efficiency, one expert has suggested.
Writing for the Register, Tony Lock of Freeform Dynamics noted that the technology is "one of IT’s great fashions" and is currently being implemented for a range of functions.
He stated: "The area in which virtualisation has achieved its greatest degree of deployment supporting live solutions is in x86 server consolidation projects."
Mr Lock went on to say that this is because the arguments for savings are "relatively straight forward".
Firms point to the fact that server virtualisation reduces the consumption of electricity, brings down the cost of software licences and boosts utilisation rates, he explained.
Net Media recently reported comments made by managing director of Enterprise Strategy Group Steve O’Donnell that virtualisation can drive energy savings.
Businesses have realised that running a lot of servers at reduced utilisation is wasteful, he added.
