Virtualisation ‘becoming more popular among SMEs’

10th August

Category: Virtualisation

Virtual software providers are beginning to court companies in the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) market, it has been suggested.

Reporting for Computer Weekly, Kathleen Hall noted packages are being aimed at firms of this size from VMware, Citrix and Microsoft.

The journalist observed the technology would allow SMEs to operate multiple servers from one piece of hardware, allowing a business to save money on energy bills.

She used the example of J&H Bunn - a manufacturing company in the SME bracket that adopted virtualisation and predicted the move will save £47,000 over buying new hardware.

It implemented VMware software after rapid expansion meant it needed to double its server capacity.

John Fuller, IT director of the firm, said: “In the past we thought virtualisation was something that only applied to larger companies.”

Writing for CXO Today, Pankaj Deshpande and Jayant Walvekar recently highlighted virtualisation as one of the key reasons many organisations were able to survive the economic downturn.
