Virtualisation software has "multiple benefits" for those firms that decide to invest in the technology.
This is the opinion of industry commentator Robert Jacques, who wrote in an article for Personal Computer World that this kind of software is one of the rare pieces of IT that "lives up to its own hype".
He remarked: "There are multiple benefits from embracing this technology, the most obvious and compelling of which is a potentially jaw-dropping reduction in data centre costs."
According to Mr Jacques, server consolidation can lead to organisations making large-scale savings on their hardware expenditure.
While an exact number is hard to pin down, he added, experts estimate that businesses could remove 80 per cent of their current server capacity by introducing virtual machines.
Earlier this month, Hands On VMware engineer Shawn Morel told Reg Hardware that virtualisation can often seem magical to executives who integrate the technology into their working environment.
