Many companies view virtualisation as one of the best means to boost their IT operations, a new survey has suggested.

The Strategies to Improve IT Efficiencies in 2010 study was carried out by Forrester Research, Datamation reports.

According to the report, the advent of virtual software - such as Citrix XenDesktop - has made it possible to provide an IT service for any challenge that is still cheap enough to boost business productivity.

The survey involved more than 215 IT decision-makers and revealed interest in adopting virtual platforms has risen in recent years.

When asked what particular areas of their organisation should be improved to make IT more efficient, 55 per cent of those quizzed chose "reducing the infrastructure administration workload through server consolidation" as their answer.

This was a marked increase from the 47 per cent recorded in 2008, the source noted.

TMCnet.com contributor Graham Smith recently observed server virtualisation has been very successful at enhancing physical server utilisation.
