Companies that invest in virtual software can expect to experience the financial benefits of such a move almost immediately, it has been suggested.

Knowledge Center contributor Mark Settle noted how his firm was able to recoup its virtualisation outlay in under six months, eweek.com reports.

The industry expert said server reuse by multiple development teams saved the enterprise $5 million (£3.2 million).

He added: "These efforts also reduced power consumption and data centre floor space requirements by 20 per cent."

The business was also pleasantly surprised to discover the unexpected side-effects a move to virtual appliances could bring, Mr Settle observed.

He explained these benefits included labour savings within the IT organisations and improved productivity on a wider scale.

Kathleen Hall recently reported for Computer Weekly virtualisation is becoming increasingly favoured among small and medium-sized enterprises as packages from Citrix, VMware and Microsoft are being targeted at companies of this size.
